Frequently asked questions
What do you actually do?
Whatever it takes to enable our clients to be more mature and intelligent about data. We are full stack data scientists, which means we use some math and some information to make the world a better place.
What is the craziest project you worked on?
They are all crazy. Crazy awesome. The next ones are always better than the last.
What is big data?
The term used to mean data that couldn’t fit all at once into memory. If you can open it in a spreadsheet in Excel, it’s not big data. The strange thing about data is that if it’s too big to open on a computer it could be caused by having too many columns, so messy poorly organized data. The definition is further complicated by new approaches where you treat data as a stream of incremental changes that are easier to fit and process, one chunk at a time. To me it becomes a big data problem if we are intentionally or by accident are unable to get a sense of the shape of the data without some fancy “big data” tricks like sampling or aggregating. The truth is it doesn't have to be "big" data to be valuable; it could be "small" or "thick" data that is more qualitative than quantitative that means the difference between success and failure for a business.
What is a data scientist?
Josh Wills once tweeted that a data scientist is a “person who is better at statistics than any software engineer and better at software engineering than any statistician.” It’s a little more complex than that, but that’s close enough. We like to think of full stack data scientists as someone who can write production code, deploy it, and interpret the underlying statistics. If this sounds like you, then please get in touch!
We humans generate 700 terabytes of new data per second — and that rate is increasing. To turn that data into valuable insights, we need more than 1.5 million additional data scientists, analysts, engineers, and managers than are currently available in the workforce — a shortage that equals a 50% gap between supply and demand. Acorn Analytics was founded in 2016 to address this need, providing expertise from seasoned experts in fields such as artificial intelligence, psychology, and systems design.
